Climate Ready Hobart

"Please make it urgent. Real urgent."

Member of the Hobart Climate Assembly, March 2024.

The community spoke, we listened.

Climate change is happening and impacting Hobart.

Responding requires all of us to act- now.

Informed by more than 1000 face-to-face conversations, 240 climate leaders, 9 hours of co-design workshops and Tasmania’s first citizen’s jury on climate change, the Climate Ready Hobart Strategy was endorsed by the Hobart City Council on 16 September. This pivotal document guides what we can do to respond to the climate and biodiversity emergency together as we move towards 2040.

Why we engaged with the community?

Initiated in May 2023, the City of Hobart embarked on an ambitious program to discover what, why and how people, businesses and communities are preparing for, and responding to, the impacts of climate change in our city.

We also wanted to find out what opportunities and barriers people are facing in their attempts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The results are startling, sometimes confronting, but also empowering for a community that is taking action to build a Climate Ready Hobart.

Thank you to the contribution of the Hobart community who took the time to share its’ priorities, concerns and questions on how we tackle this complex issue together.

What we heard from the community

In an iterative process, building over the last 18 months, we've deeply listened and collaborated closely with climate leaders across government, university, business and community organisations, as well as young people and palawa leaders, to co-design principles, identify gaps and opportunities and prioritise actions.

The following reports share what we heard:

We also convened Tasmania’s first citizens assembly on climate change. It comprised a representative sample of the Hobart community. The assembly sent a clear message that they want the City of Hobart and the community to act urgently.

It recommended ten priorities for action.

What role did research play?

The Climate Ready Hobart Strategy was informed by collaboration with the community as well as based on climate science and other evidence. The reports documenting the findings from each process:

  • Zero emissions pathways: Research was undertaken to understand the sources of emissions and practical actions to reduce our emissions.

  • Assessing climate risk: A climate risk assessment helped us understand how future climate scenarios might impact Hobart. It made recommendations on priorities and actions to build climate resilience. LINK TO CLIAMTE RISK FIRST PASS REPORT.
