New Town Rivulet - Estuary Restoration Project

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the draft design. The team is currently reviewing all feedback and will report back soon with the outcome of this project.

The City of Hobart, in partnership with Glenorchy City Council, is seeking community feedback on proposed designs to restore the mouth of New Town Rivulet to a more natural landscape while addressing the increasing risk of erosion from deteriorating concrete embankments.

The proposed designs aim to return the area to a more natural, estuarine landscape, benefiting local birdlife, improving the health of the River Derwent, and creating a far more beautiful area for residents.

It will also address the increased risk of bank erosion caused by the deteriorating concrete embankments, which are up to 60 years old.

The project will:

  • re-establish more natural rivulet banks by replacing concrete with rocks and native vegetation
  • stabilise historical contamination in existing sediments
  • provide improved access for safe sediment removal
  • improve the environment, amenity and functionality of the area
  • manage excess excavated materials in an environmentally sustainable way by reusing materials on-site where possible.
