New Town Rivulet - Estuary Restoration Project

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback on the draft design.

An Engagement Summary Report has been produced, detailing the feedback we received and how we've responded to it. You can access this report in the documents section on the right-hand side of this page.

The final design has now been completed, incorporating changes based on your feedback. These changes are detailed in the Engagement Summary Report. Notable changes include:

  • Widening the footpaths to 1.8 meters to enhance accessibility for all users, including those in wheelchairs and with prams
  • Improving landscaping through streambank protection and incorporating additional blockwork and vegetation
  • Additional turf adjacent to the carpark off Risdon Road

You can view the final design under the documents section on the right hand side of this page.

While the primary goal of this project is to address the degradation of the Rivulet, it also presents an opportunity to enhance recreational opportunities and natural assets in the area. While community feedback was largely positive, in response to some concerns we heard, it's important to note the following:

  • The final design is consistent with best practice water management
  • It has been modelled to ensure flood waters continue to be safely conveyed
  • An arborist has confirmed that the planned works have a low risk of impacting the roots of the existing mature blue gums
  • Based on the recommendations of the arborist, one of the existing blue gums on Marine Esplanade is proposed to be removed. The tree is in structurally poor condition (stump with regrowth only). Replacement eucalypts will be provided in the area to provide future succession
  • Both the City of Hobart and Glenorchy City Council are committed to future maintenance to uphold the functionality and aesthetics of the project

The New Town Rivulet Estuary project has been identified as a high priority project by the City of Hobart and is supported by Glenorchy City Council. Delivery of this project is subject to future approvals and funding commitments. An update will be shared with the community later in 2024 once these processes are finalised.

Background

The City of Hobart, with the support of Glenorchy City Council, identified the need to restore the New Town Rivulet Estuary due to the deteriorating concrete embankments, which are up to 60 years old. This project will restore the mouth of the New Town Rivulet returning the area to a more natural, estuarine landscape. This will benefit local birdlife, improve the health of the River Derwent and create a more beautiful area for the community to enjoy.

A draft design was prepared in early 2023, and community feedback was sought via an online survey in May 2023. We asked for input on the draft design and received valuable feedback regarding level of support and specific ideas and concerns.
