Open Space Strategy
When you think of ‘open space’ in Hobart, what comes to mind?
Here in Hobart, we love our open spaces. With more than 4700 hectares of bushland, parks and reserves, there are many places for activity, contemplation, gathering and play.
Our open spaces are home to an abundance of native wildlife, plants, woodlands, forests and grasslands. They are also places of cultural and heritage significance and provide a wealth of recreation and tourism opportunities.
After completing our first round of community engagement on open spaces, a draft Open Space Strategy for Hobart has been developed, and we are now inviting feedback on it.
Watch our video below or read through the principles, then have your say by completing our survey below.
This strategy will guide the provision and management of existing open spaces and the delivery of new and improved open spaces to meet the needs of Hobart’s residents and visitors, now and into the future.
The purpose of this second round of community engagement is to:
Present the draft Open Space Strategy to the community.
Provide an opportunity for the community to prioritise key actions and areas of focus in the strategy.
Facilitate targeted engagement with particular ‘Hardly Reached’ groups.
What are Hobart's 'open spaces'?
‘Open space’ referred to in the strategy is land owned or managed by the City of Hobart, and used primarily for leisure, active or passive recreation, nature conservation and other public uses. The strategy excludes restricted access sportsgrounds, such as North Hobart Oval, and the New Town Sports Precinct.
The strategy includes:
Bushlands and reserves.
Recreation and urban parks.
Playgrounds.
Skate parks.
Outdoor gyms.
Beaches and foreshores.
Tracks and trails.
Public gardens.
Other green landscaped areas.
