Sandy Bay ferry terminal

27 January 2026

Detailed planning and design for a terminal is underway at Lords Beach, Sandy Bay, as well as the other two key locations as part of the River Ferry Expansion Project (Lindisfarne and Glenorchy). Lords Beach was selected for further investigation after Wrest Point was ruled out by its lessee due to parking concerns.

Whilst the planning is progressing, some challenges have emerged. The Lords Beach and Lindisfarne (Natone Street) terminals need approval from the Tasmanian Planning Commission to address zoning restrictions in the State Planning Scheme. Additionally, a marine survey at Lords Beach found the nationally protected Spotted Handfish species, requiring referral to the Federal Government for assessment and mitigation strategies.

These steps will delay the project, but the City of Hobart and the State Government remain committed to delivering improved ferry infrastructure for Hobart. After these processes are completed, and depending on their outcome, Council will be required to decide as to whether or not the terminal will go ahead, with final approval resting with the Tasmanian Planning Commission.
