South Hobart Pedestrian Improvements

The City is proposing a range of pedestrian improvements in Macquarie Street, South Hobart. The improvements would provide a continuous, level, step-free pedestrian path along the south side of Macquarie Street from D’Arcy Street to the signalised pedestrian crossing at the Southern Outlet. Project officers would like to hear from people in South Hobart who may live, own a property or operate a business in the area, particularly in relation to Stage 2 (b).

A summary of the various pedestrian improvement projects for the South Hobart village is below:


Stage 1 Pedestrian improvements - currently under construction

Access improvements are being installed at the intersection of D’Arcy Street, Washington Street and Macquarie Street. This work is to install new ramps, surfaces, tactile indicators, bike racks and a new, safer pedestrian crossing in Macquarie Street on the west (mountain) side of the intersection.


Stage 2 (a) Pedestrian improvements which are planned

Two improved pedestrian crossing facilities in Macquarie Street between Elboden Street and the Southern Outlet are planned to be installed later this year. These upgraded crossings will provide pedestrian safety benefits with new island refuges and kerb outstands. They will replace the existing crossing points near the butcher and near Bupa. The current crossings are well-used by pedestrians crossing the road, and the project was (successfully) put forward to the Commonwealth Government’s Black Spot road safety program by members of the South Hobart community.


Stage 2 (b) Additional proposed pedestrian improvements (the focus of this consultation)

The subject of this consultation is a proposal for five raised, continuous footpath treatments at the intersections where Macquarie Street (south side) meets Denison Street, Anglesea Street, Downie Street, Weld Street and Elboden Street. This proposal would connect projects 1 and 2 (above), providing better walkability and access along the length of Macquarie Street between those projects.


Stage 3 Future improvements
