Transforming Collins Street

Transforming Collins Street Graphic

The Transforming Collins Street project is a tactical trial designed to reimagine and develop a long-term vision for Collins Street. The project was endorsed for installation by the Hobart City Council at its meeting in September 2024.

The project involves various temporary changes, including streetside dining areas and separated cycling lanes, along a 700-metre stretch of Collins Street (between Molle and Murray streets).

As part of its resolution, Council emphasised the importance of regular monitoring and evaluating the trial’s impact. The resolution specifically outlined a commitment to structured reporting at key intervals throughout the two-year trial.

For full details, refer to the Council Meeting agenda.

Reporting commitment

The council's resolution requires ongoing reporting on the project's progress, including community sentiment, usage data, and other key metrics.

The Monitoring and Evaluation Framework, which outlines the approach for tracking the trial's effectiveness, can be access here: Monitoring & Evaluation Framework

Victoria to Murray Street update (July 2025)

The original Council resolution from 2024 removed all parking in the block between Victoria and Murray Street. This was revisited by Council following feedback from stakeholders. A resolution at the 31 March 2025 Council meeting determined that the previously advertised trial design between Victoria and Murray Street would be replaced with a new design. The new design retained:

  • vehicle parking on one side of the street ("Mountain Bound") with a protected bicycle lane
  • the "in lane" bus stop on the other side of the Street ("City Bound").

These changes between Victoria Street and the Murray Street intersection will occur later this year (late 2025).
