Transforming Collins Street is an ongoing two-year Tactical Trial which involves a variety of tactical trial changes, including street side dining areas and separated cycling lanes, on one of Hobart's most varied streets.
The project area is a 700-metre stretch of Collins Street which runs from the Molle Street intersection through to the Murray Street intersection at the edge of the CBD. This area will be enhanced with a mix of street side dining areas, separated bicycle lanes, additional accessible parking spaces, street plantings, greening, a new zebra crossing, and a speed limit reduction to 30km/h as a key safety improvement.
2-Year Tactical Trial: Monitoring, Community Engagement and Evaluation
The Transforming Collins Street Tactical Trial is aimed at monitoring and evaluating the data and also engaging with the community to understand the sentiment surrounding the changes to Collins Street. This trial seeks to understand the needs, interests, usage, and concerns of a broad spectrum of stakeholders and community. The data and feedback gathered will be provided to the Council and community at five stages;
- Stage 1: Pre-installation Baseline Survey (current Engagement Stage)
- Stage 2: Post 1-month installation,
- Stage 3: Post 3-months installation,
- Stage 4: Post12-months installation
- Stage 5: Post 2-years of the installation.
The Transforming Collins Street Trial construction activities are currently scheduled to commence in mid to late March 2025 and should take around 6 weeks to complete.

You may also be aware that a public meeting relating to the project will occur on 25 March 2025. Details of this Public meeting are available on the Council’s Website and the Council’s YourSay website provides details of how to book tickets and make a submission to the public meeting.
It should be noted that this is a separate process required under Section 59(2) of the Local Government Act 1993. Please note: A public meeting submission is not a submission to this feedback and engagement process.
Your participation is crucial to our understanding and the success of this trial. Working together, trialling changes and engaging with users and stakeholders to better understand how we can transform Collins Street into a thriving community and active city space is an exciting way to guide the evolution of Hobart, Tasmania’s Capital City.
