Support for Hobart becoming a UNESCO City of Literature

The City of Hobart is currently examining feedback from this survey as part of a larger research project.

A report is due to council in the first quarter of this year and we will return with the outcomes when they become available.

Thank you to those who took the time to complete the survey and contribute toward the processes of assessment.

The City of Hobart's Community and Cultural Program's Unit is currently researching the application process and expectations associated with being designated the title of either a UNESCO City of Literature or UNESCO World Book Capital.

Your assistance in completing this survey will greatly assist the research process.

Survey responses close at 12pm on Wed 15 November 2017.

THE BACKGROUND

The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) was created in 2004 to foster international cooperation with and between cities that have recognised creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.

We would like to know which, if either, of the two options you believe represents the best opportunity and interests for the City of Hobart.

OPTIONS:

Option 1. UNESCO City of Literature:

The member cities that form the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) work together placing creativity and cultural industries at the core of their development plans at the local level and actively cooperate at the international level.

To become a member of the UCCN, candidate cities must submit an application generated by the municipality (Council) that clearly demonstrates their continuous and active; willingness, commitment and capacity to contribute to the objectives of the UCCN. In particular, candidate cities should prepare and consistently implement an action plan, report every six months on their achievements and participate in the UCCN Annual Meetings.

Option 2. UNESCO World Book Capital:

Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capitals undertake to promote and foster books and reading and to organise activities over a twelve month period. The definition of ‘book’ can be broad.

The City commits to deliver a program of events and initiatives specifically conceived for the World Book Capital and implemented during the city's twelve month term. The activities should have long-term benefits for partners and society at large and be presented in collaboration with national, regional and international professional organizations representing writers, publishers, booksellers and librarians.
