Garrington Park, New Town - Upgrade Concept Plan

Consultation has concluded

Thank you to those who participated by providing feedback on this project. We have reviewed your responses which you can read about in our project Engagement Findings Report.

The Garrington Park Upgrade Concept Plan did not receive overwhelming community support for the plan in current form.

A snapshot of the Engagement Findings Report shows:

  • Just over 50% of residents support an upgrade of the park but after analysis of comments it is clear there isn't an overwhelming support for the design proposed.
  • A total of 18% (6 respondents) indicated they ‘somewhat’ support the concept plan, however further analysis of these comments showed either a desire for additional infrastructure or a desire to scale back the concept plan in its current form.
  • Of those 47% of respondents who did not support the concept plan, the strong theme emerging from comments and the justification for this response was that Garrington Park is too small to have a BBQ and picnic area developed, and this development would result in an increase in park users resulting in noise and traffic issues.
  • A total of 35% of respondents were supportive of the plan, with the justification of improving community cohesion as the reason for their support.

The findings above will be taken to the Parks and Recreation Committee Meeting in June where a determination will be made as to if the project should be considered for the 2021 and 2022 Capital Works Program and Annual Budgets.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Garrington Park upgrade concept plan survey. We received numerous responses and over the coming weeks will collate the feedback. We will be in touch shortly with the outcome of the survey.

Following community interest, Council has endorsed a concept plan to upgrade Garrington Park, Noble Drive, New Town.

The park upgrade will include new barbeques, picnic settings, shelter, tap and drinking water fountain as well as bicycle storage hoops. The project is currently unfunded, however, if there is strong community support, the proposed improvements will then be considered for funding when Council determines the future Capital Works Programs and Annual Budgets.

Community endorsement of the concept plan was sought from 19 February to 23 March through an online survey.
