Draft Affordable Housing and Homelessness Commitment
Consultation has concluded
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our engagement process on the Draft Affordable Housing and Homelessness Commitment. Your feedback was used to inform the final version of the Commitment which was endorsed by Council on 6 December 2021.
Engagement identified that there is overall support for the draft commitment, with many survey respondents recognising that affordable housing (to rent or buy) and homelessness are significant issues in Hobart, and that housing is a basic human right. Engagement also identified that actions within the commitment need to be targeted, specific and measurable in order to effectively address housing and homelessness issues in Hobart. Changes to land use regulation such as zoning and planning schemes were seen as critical measures for effective change. The draft commitment was also supported by the majority of the stakeholder organisations who provided feedback.
Details of the feedback can be viewed in the Community, Culture and Events Committee agenda or in the Engagement Summary Report. You can also view the final version of the Commitment here.
The City of Hobart is committed to identifying and to the best of its ability addressing the full diversity of issues in relation to affordable and social housing and homelessness within the City region. There has been significant recent change in the housing and homelessness landscape within Hobart and the City has taken a lead role in collaborating with the sector as well as the State and Federal governments to identify strategies to support those in the community experiencing homelessness and to assist in the provision of affordable housing.
The draft Affordable Housing and Homelessness Commitment has been written to clarify the City's role, articulate the priority focus areas and identify specific actions that the City will continue and begin to undertake to address affordable and social housing and homelessness issues over the next two years. The draft Commitment builds on the work undertaken through the implementation of the Housing and Homelessness Strategy 2016-2019.
The City is now seeking community feedback on the draft Affordable Housing and Homelessness Commitment. Feedback gathered during this engagement period will be used to consider any changes or amendments to the draft commitment before presenting the final document to Council.
