In 2019 the City of Hobart commenced a project to update the outdated Aboriginal Strategy 2002. Extensive engagement commenced to develop new commitments and actions. Key themes in areas of action included:
building relationships and working in partnership with Aboriginal people
building culturally safe workplace and increasing understanding and respect
raising the profile of Aboriginal people, heritage and culture and sharing truth of history
demonstrating leadership in social justice and inclusion
The draft ACAP has been updated to reflect comments and findings from the broad community engagement and also with recommendations from Reconciliation Australia.
The follow deliverable has been added to Action 14, in line with the Council resolution of 23 October 2017:
“Continue to advocate for a change in the date of Australia Day and support the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community’s Invasion Day Protest on 26 January in Hobart as appropriate”
The further deliverable under Action 7 has been amended to include consideration of the provision of Aboriginal messaging for new residents.
Key changes to the ACAP are predominantly grammatical alterations such as capitalisation and sentence structure. A small number of other minor amendments have been made to the document in response to community feedback.
The draft ACAP was presented to the Community, Culture and Events Committee at their meeting on 4 December 2019. The draft ACAP was then presented to and endorsed by Council at their meeting on 16 December 2019. The final endorsement of the ACAP from Reconciliation Australia is still in progress.
