Why a 10-year Capital City Strategic Plan?
During the preparation of the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan, a series of amendments were made to the Local Government Act 1993 which means that councils are now required to develop 10-year strategic plans and ensure that the long-term financial and asset management plans and policies reflect their strategic plans.
This is why the City of Hobart has developed a 10-year Capital City Plan 2015-2025.
What happens to the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan?
The new 10-year Capital City Strategic Plan replaces the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan.
The 2014-2019 Plan was however used as a key reference point to develop the new Plan because it already represented the years 2014-2019.
While the new plan covers the remaining 10 years of the 2025 Community Vision, it takes into account the work done previously and includes some refined and further developed strategic objectives and strategies.
These refined and further developed strategies are now the Council’s operational priorities for the first four years of the plan.
How was the 2025 Community Vision developed?
The 2025 Community Vision was developed in 2006. We engaged with the community and stakeholders as follows:
The combination of the approaches used generated around 1,000 contributions to the development of the 2025 Community Vision.
How is the 2025 Community Vision represented in the draft Capital City Strategic Plan?
In developing the 2014-2019 Strategic Plan (the Plan that the new 10-year Capital City Strategic Plan now replaces) the 2025 Community Vision was revalidated with the community through an engagement exercise which included:
Feedback from the community and stakeholders continued to support the 2025 Community Vision and the strategic objectives and priorities for the years 2014-2019.
The 2014-2019 City of Hobart Strategic Plan was used as a key reference point to develop the new Capital City Strategic Plan and the refined and further developed strategies are now the operational priorities of the Council for the first four years of the new 10-Year Capital City Strategic Plan.
Is 2025 far enough into the future?
The 2025 Community Vision has a life span of 20 years, with 10 years remaining. Work is planned to be undertaken to develop a plan and approach to extend the Vision beyond 2025 and potentially as far as 2050 or 2060.
It is anticipated that a report will be prepared for the Council's consideration in early 2016, outlining a proposal to extend the Community Vision beyond 2025 which would undoubtedly include extensive community engagement. You are invited to have your say on when you think the Vision should be extended to by responding to the quick poll on this project page.
