Dog Management Policy

Project Update

Round 1 engagement is now complete. We'll use this feedback to inform proposed changes to the Dog Management Policy. Round 2 engagement (scheduled for July-August) will give the community a second opportunity to provide feedback on the draft Policy.

The City of Hobart is currently seeking community feedback to prepare a new Dog Management Policy.

We know our Hobart community cares deeply about their dogs, as well as our shared parks and natural areas. We invite you to share with us what you value about responsible dog ownership, and how you would like the Policy to be implemented.

What is the Dog Management Policy?

The Dog Management Policy is an important document. The Policy:

  • outlines what it means to be a responsible dog owner,
  • shows where and when dogs can and cannot be exercised,
  • determines how the City should implement the policy and ensure responsible dog ownership, and
  • ensures the City of Hobart complies with the Dog Control Act 2000.

How can I have my say?

Community engagement for the Dog Management Policy will be done in 2 main rounds.

Round 1: 8 April - 28 April - The round has now closed
The City is seeking: general feedback on the existing Dog Management Policy 2019-2023. This includes Declared Areas (where dogs can and cannot be on-lead and off-lead).

All feedback from this stage will inform proposed changes to the Dog Management Policy. The draft Policy will then go to the Hobart City Council for review. When Council is satisfied with the changes proposed in the Policy, the new draft Policy will be released to the community for further feedback (round 2).

Round 2: 8 July - 4 August
The City is seeking specific feedback on the new draft Dog Management Policy and proposed Declared Areas.

You can read more about the above engagement periods in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

The above engagement process aligns with the Dog Control Act 2000.
