What is the Hobart Transport Strategy 2024?
The Strategy will give us a 10-year plan to guide our transport decisions. This includes deciding how we invest in transport.
The Strategy is action-orientated and identifies the City’s goals for the future transport network of Hobart. The themes of the 2024 Transport Strategy focus on transport choice and are grouped into three main categories as shown below. The Strategy includes actions for each theme.
Has Hobart ever had a Transport Strategy?
The City of Hobart developed a draft Transport Strategy in 2018, following a period of extensive research and community consultation. This community consultation has informed the draft Hobart Transport Strategy 2024. You can find the Engagement Report which details community and stakeholder engagement done on transport to date in the documents section of this webpage.
The 2018 draft Transport Strategy established nine themes and position statements which were endorsed by Council. These themes and position statements were considered in the development of the draft Hobart Transport Strategy 2024.
How will the Hobart Transport Strategy 2024 make a difference?
The Strategy includes an implementation plan that clearly identifies key actions for the next 10 years. How we prioritise these actions will be informed by community feedback. The final version of the Strategy will clearly identify actions which are short, medium and long term priorities, as well as a short list of key priority actions for the next five years.
State, federal and local government all have responsibilities for our transport network. As well as identifying actions we as the City of Hobart can take to improve transport options, the Strategy identifies where we can advocate for change and support transport projects delivered by other levels of government - such as better public transport.
How will my feedback be used?
Your feedback will help us to better understand what’s most important to our community so we can create a Transport Strategy that carefully considers how we prioritise what’s important.
Different modes of transport benefit from different street designs:
We may think of these different road users as competing with one another. But most of us use more than one mode of transport to get around.
And we all use our streets to exercise, shop, socialise or spend time.
So we all benefit from finding a balance between these interests and ensuring our roads and streets can work for everyone – and your feedback helps us find the right balance.
I’ve already given feedback to City of Hobart about transport through previous consultations. Why are you asking me again?
We have asked some really important questions about transport over the years – both at the neighbourhood level and for the whole City.
Your previous feedback has been used to develop the draft Hobart Transport Strategy 2024. If you would like to read the Engagement Report which details what we've heard in previous community consultations, you can access it under the documents section of this webpage.
Some of the priorities you have already told us as a community are:
Walking: strong support for recognising walking as the most fundamental mode of transport
Cycling: strong support for actions to help more people feel safe to ride bicycles and reduce traffic congestion
Public transport: strong support for actions to increase public transport use and reduce traffic congestion
Connections between transport modes: support for better connections between buses, ferries, park and ride options, footpaths, and cycling lanes
Clear priorities and targets: the Strategy should set specific priorities, targets and timing commitments for key actions
