Elizabeth Street Retail Precinct - streetscape upgrade project

In December 2018, the City started engaging with the community on the upgrade of the Elizabeth Street Retail Precinct. Engagement for this project has so far consisted of:

  • Post Card Survey
  • Community Survey
  • Community Workshops with four stakeholder groups; Community, Young People, Traders and Business and Active Commuters.

If you would like to find out what we've heard so far, the results can be found in the Engagement Report - Stage 1 Issues and Vision

We are currently in the Directions and Options stage and are working closely with our Project Action Team, who will put forward recommendations on the future of the precinct to Council.

Elizabeth Street retail precinct – aka Midtown – will be the third project to be developed under the City of Hobart’s Local Retail Precincts Plan. The City has worked with local communities in Lenah Valley and New Town to improve their shopping areas. A refreshed Lenah Valley shopping area was constructed in 2018 and an upgrade will occur in New Town in 2019.

The focus has now shifted to Elizabeth Street with planning underway and a comprehensive community engagement program scheduled for 2019.

We invite the community to join us in re-imagining the future of Elizabeth Street. This project's focus will be between Melville Street and Warwick Street with works to commence in the 2020/2021 financial year.

Potential improvements

A design will be prepared in the second half of 2019, once the the concept planning has been undertaken with community stakeholders. Streetscape improvements that may be within the scope of the project include:

•Renewed, widened footpaths

•Improved pedestrian crossing facilities

•Landscaping and high quality surface finishes

•Deciduous street trees

•New street furniture

•Public art

•Smart cities infrastructure
