New Town Retail Precinct Streetscape Upgrade Project

Artist impression of Cross Street Intersection in New Town being converted for a community event

The City of Hobart is upgrading the New Town retail precinct to create a more vibrant, inviting and accessible place for everyone.

Stage one of the project was completed in early 2020, and after a delay caused by the impacts of COVID-19, work on stage two can start thanks to an Australian Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program grant, which will fund the majority of the upgrade works.

Stage two of the project will include the creation of a New Town community hub that will create a space for pop-up events, markets and other community activities.

It will also include a raft of improvements to the area, including two new pedestrian crossings, a bus shelter and upgraded infrastructure with a focus on pedestrian safety, access and amenity

The concept design has been developed by the City of Hobart in collaboration with the New Town community.

  • CLOSED: Registration has now closed for the Project Action Team

We are seeking expressions of interest from community stakeholders to join the Project Action Team (PAT). The team will ideally be comprised of a balance of New Town community representatives including traders from along the street, residents and stakeholders from the local area.

Diverse groups work best, so we’re inviting people of different ages and life stages to get involved. Ideally we’d have about 20 people on the team.

The group will play a major role in shaping the direction of the project. Participants will determine the objectives of the project, evaluate a number of options and recommend a draft concept for the community and the Council to consider.
What’s involved? We’ll provide you with information including reports and presentations from various experts. It will be interesting and important work - but it does require a commitment to attend some evening meetings in September and November and a Saturday workshop on 4 November 2017. Meetings will not be held during school holidays. Food and refreshments will be provided at the meetings and the City can cover some costs that may be a barrier to participation such as taxi fares and childcare. Please discuss this with us.

Interested? Find more information and register here, or call the project manager Sarah Bendeich on

This Survey is now closed.  We are collating a report and will present the outcomes to the Project Action Team as part of our Directions and Options phase of community consultation.

The City of Hobart is planning to improve the New Town Road local retail precinct to make it a more vibrant, inviting and accessible place for everyone to enjoy and take pride in.  The first step is to understand the aspirations and priorities of the community. To help us with this, we’d like to hear from people who live, work, study, run a business, visit or shop in the precinct.

Please take the time to complete the Issues and Vision Survey by 1 September 2017.

If you are having any issues completing this survey online please call 6238 2809 to request a printed survey or 6238 2584 to request a phone interview.
